After a period of hiatus, the National Schools Solar Program is once again offering grants for awnings and shade structures to Australian schools but applications have a cut off of 20-August so be quick !

That's why the Australian Federal government has included shade awnings in the National Solar Schools Program Grant aimed at tackling climate change.
Eligible schools can get funding for retractable shade awnings.

Shade Sail Grants 2010
Here are several Shade Sail grants and funding opportunities in 2010 that we know of which available to Australian schools and non-profit organisations (valid at the time of writing). Additionally many local councils offer community grants.

- South Australian Government Rural Education Grants: grants ranging from $100 to $25,000 which appear to provide scope for funding of Shade Sails and Shade Structures.

Throughout Australia, schools are getting government grants for sustainability projects which include Shade Solutions.
The Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative is one such national project and schools are encouraged to create and submit sustainability plans as part of their participation.
Shade Solutions including Shade Sails and Shade Awnings are great ways to achieve sustainability as they can greatly reduce energy consumption and use, control airflow and water evaporation from pools and sustainable gardens. Shade Solutions are a cost effective way to save energy, are low maintenance and the components of Shade Sails are recyclable. Any school can use Shade Solutions to become a sustainable school.
Among the grants available is the National Schools Solar Grant which also provides funding of shade awnings for schools.

Calls for regulations on Childcare Shade Structures
I read with interest recently that leading consumer groups have called for regulation of Shade Sails in childcare centres to ensure that the type of material used provides the right level of protection.
A few articles were run by the major news sites including "UV risk from childcare sun shades" from news.com.au "Deadly ray fear" from the Herald Sun and "Shade cloth 'cancer risk' for children" from Adelaide News.
This is a great idea as not enough suppliers and installers pay attention to the UV protections levels of the materials they install.
New regulations for the industry would be welcomed to prevent false claims being made by some suppliers because there are some careless providers in the industry.
Shade Sails offer great UV protection for sun-smart schools when used properly. We make every effort to set our customers expectations in terms of the levels of UV protection that their shade sail solutions will provide.

South Australian Shade Sail funding in the Media
The issue of South Australian cuts to Shade Sail projects was raised in a recent article in the ABC. The government, although acknowledging the SunSmart benefits of Shade Sails posed unreasonable questions about Shade Sail Safety. The government should note that Shade Sail accidents are in fact much rarer than skin cancer which kills many more Australians.
